100 Degree Day Tips to Save Money

100 Degree Day Tips to Save Money
|

The temperature hits 100 outside and your A/C is not working for some reason. Please know that while we appreciate your business we also hate seeing you waste your time and money having us out to troubleshoot and repair a problem you may be able to fix yourself. Before you pick up the phone try these checks.

If your window unit doesn’t run when you turn it on

It’s pretty common for one of our technicians to discover that the breaker is tripped. Breakers can trip or be turned off for several innocent reasons so for your sake check for a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. Replace the fuse or reset breaker if necessary.

If your condenser is running but doesn’t cool enough

The first thing to do is to check the thermostat and make sure someone hasn’t set it higher than your comfort level. If they did lower the temperature setting and see if that makes you comfortable. If not, it could be that you have a dirty condenser, filter and/or evaporator coil. If that is the case you really should have us out to service your machine.

The evaporator coil accumulates dirt and is typically located inside the home in a chamber in front of the furnace or in your heat pump blower and usually is not easily accessible. Like with a condenser most home owners prefer that a trained technician handle this task. By the way, cleaning condensers and evaporators is among the services performed during spring and/or fall system checks. If you are a service agreement customer, these chores will be checked and performed automatically.

Another reason your air conditioner could operate sluggishly is it may be low on refrigerant. Replenishing refrigerant is NOT something you want to do yourself. This task requires special equipment and is governed by EPA restrictions that prohibit the venting of refrigerant gases into the atmosphere.
